Lolita fashion

Lolita is, and has been for quite some time, my favorite fashion. It is said to be inspired by Victorian Era children's clothing, but looking deeper you can see that it often borrows style tips from many other historical periods, and sometimes almost completely ignores them.

This is a fashion full of opposites: antique and current, delicate and strong, cute and creepy, young and old. Finding the right balance between each of these elements is what makes it so interesting.

A topic that is often mentioned are "the Lolita Rules". But, to me, the key to style is knowing when and how to break these "rules". They are still useful for those who want to play safe and make sure not to stray from this particular style, but I find that some of them are outdated and aren't suitable for our 21st century needs.

Therefore, rather than rules or guidelines, one might think of principles to the style: without them, it just stops being Lolita - and that is completely fine if intended -, but these are broad enough and allow us to have fun with our own clothes. If I had to sum it up, the basic principles to Lolita would be as follows:

♦ Modesty: not exposing too much skin, knowing in what situations more or less skin - again, moderately - can be exposed.

♦ Elegance: this might not be the best word to describe it, but to me Lolita has a sense of luxury. High quality fabric, lace, exuberant prints, attention to details... It looks, feels and often is expensive. And this is not restricted to some substyles, all of them have their share of "elegance", just shown in different ways.

♦ Silhouette: Lolita fashion has a distinct silhouette, with a relatively narrow waist and a relatively broad skirt hem. Sometimes the waistline goes up (empire waist) or the hemline goes down (tea-length), and some dresses work without a petticoat, but the basic silhouette is always there.

Lolita é, e tem sido por um bom tempo, meu estilo favorito. É dito que se inspira nas roupas infantis da Era Vitoriana, mas ao olhar mais atentamente percebe-se que empresta características de vários períodos históricos, e algumas vezes os ignora completamente. Esse estilo é cheio de opostos: antigo e atual, delicado e forte, fofo e assustador, novo e velho. Encontrar o equilíbrio perfeito entre esses elementos é o que o torna tão interessante.
As "Regras Lolita" são muitas vezes mencionadas. Mas, para mim, a chave para o estilo é saber quando e como quebrar essas "regras". Elas ainda são úteis para quem não quer se arriscar e fugir um pouco desse estilo em particular, mas algumas me parecem desatualizadas e incovenientes para as necessidades do século 21.

Dessa forma, ao invés de regras ou diretrizes, pode-se pensar em princípios para o estilo: sem eles, deixa de ser Lolita - e isso não é uma coisa ruim, se for intencional -, mas eles são amplos o suficiente para permitir brincar com nosso estilo. Se tivesse que resumir, os princípios básicos de Lolita seriam os seguintes:

♦ Recato: não expor muito o corpo, saber em quais situações é apropriado fazê-lo de forma moderada.

♦ Elegância: talvez não seja o melhor termo para isso, mas para mim Lolita tem uma sensação de luxo. Tecidos de alta qualidade, rendas, estampas exuberantes, atenção aos detalhes... Tem a aparência, a sensação e muitas vezes o preço de algo caro. E isso não se restringe a apenas alguns sub-estilos, todos eles têm sua porcentagem de "elegância", apenas demosntrada de modos diferentes.

♦ Silhueta: a moda Lolita tem uma silhueta muito distinta, relativamente acinturada e com a barra da saia ampla. Às vezes a linha da cintura sobe (cintura império) ou a barra da saia desce (midi), e alguns vestidos funcionam sem anágua/petticoat, mas a silhueta básica está sempre ali.
