2. 5 movies for lolitas

Ok, so I am trying to get away from the obvious Shimotsuma Monogatari and Marie Antoinette. It was surprisingly hard to choose only 5 movies, there are so many featuring beautiful costumes and amazing stories ! These aren't in any particular order.

"The infamous story of Benjamin Barker, a.k.a Sweeney Todd, who sets up a barber shop down in London which is the basis for a sinister partnership with his fellow tenant, Mrs. Lovett. Based on the hit Broadway musical." - IMDB

Sweeney Todd - The demon barber of Fleet Street, directed by Tim Burton, costumes by Colleen Atwood. Set in the Victorian Era, but not very historically accurate. I love the color scheme in this movie: basically shades of black and grey with red accents. One particular scene changes the palette to shades of white, blue and red, and that scene has some of my favorite outfits.

"Sparks fly when spirited Elizabeth Bennet meets single, rich, and proud Mr. Darcy. But Mr. Darcy reluctantly finds himself falling in love with a woman beneath his class. Can each overcome their own pride and prejudice?" - IMDB

Pride and Prejudice, directed by Joe Wright, costume design by Jacqueline Durran, is here representing all movies based on Jane Austen's novels. I'm not particularly a fan of the languid dresses worn in the 1790s, but what attracts me in this movie is the lifestyle aspect. Everything was full of rules and tradition, this movie is an insight on the society of those times. It amazes me how Elizabeth can be so polite while insulting others. 

"A chronicle of the life of 18th century aristocrat Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, who was reviled for her extravagant political and personal life." - IMDB

Keira Knightley again. She is a period movie veteran. The Duchess, directed by Saul Dibb, with costumes by Michael O'Connor. If Marie Antoinette was Sweet Rococo in the Sofia Coppola movie, Georgiana is more of a Classical Rococo. They also had somewhat similar lives and were friends in real life! Seriously, the dresses, hats and hairdos in this movie are beautiful.

"A young girl is relegated to servitude at a boarding school when her father goes missing and is presumed dead." - IMDB

A Little Princess, directed by Alfonso Cuarón, costume design by Judianna Makovsky. Based on the book by the same name, this is a movie I watched as a child - and I loved it. It has some great life lessons. "All girls are princesses, even if they are dressed in rags". The "rags" they wear for most of the film are really cute, though!

"American classic in which a manipulative woman and a roguish man carry on a turbulent love affair in the American south during the Civil War and Reconstruction." - IMDB

Gone With the Wind, directed by Victor Fleming, costumes by Walter Plunkett. This is another movie a watched a long time ago, but left an impression on me. Scarlet O'Hara has a really awesome wardrobe. She even makes her own dress out of curtains at one point! 

Just so you know, other films I considered were Shakespeare in Love, Amadeus, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Les Choristes and The Illusionist.

If you like historical costumes in movies, I recommend this website: The Costumer's Guide. It is incredible, with movies separated by historical period, and many images of each costume worn by the characters.

Ok, eu estou tentando evitar os óbvios Shimotsuma Monogatari e Marie Antoinette. Foi surpreendentemente difícil escolher apenas 5 filmes, tem tantos com figurinos bonitos e histórias maravilhosas! Estes não estão em nenhuma ordem em particular.

"A infame história de Benjamin Barker, a.k.a Sweeney Todd, que abre uma barbearia em Londres que é a base para uma sinistra parceria com sua colega inquilina, Mrs. Lovett. Baseado no musical da Brodway." - IMDB

Sweeney Todd - O barbeiro demoníaco da Rua Fleet, dirigido por Tim Burton, figurino de Colleen Atwood. Passa-se na Era Vitoriana, mas não é historicamente correto. Eu adoro o esquema de cores nesse filme: basicamente tons de preto e cinza com acentos em vermelho. Uma cena em particular muda a palheta para tons de branco, azul e vermelho, e essa cena tem algumas das minhas roupas favoritas.

"Há atrito quando a espirituosa Elizabeth Bennet conhece o rico, solteiro e orgulhoso Sr. Darcy. Mas o Sr. Darcy relutantemente se apaixona por uma mulher de classe inferior. Conseguirão eles deixar de lado seu próprio orgulho e preconceito?" - IMDB

Orgulho e Preconceito, dirigido por Joe Wright, figurino por Jacqueline Durran, está aqui representando todos os filmes baseados em livros da Jane Austen. Não sou muito fã dos vestidos lânguidos usados nos anos 1790~, mas o que me atrai nesse filme é o modo de vida. Tudo era cheio de regras e tradição. Me admira como a Elizabeth consegue ser tão educada ao insultar os outros.

Keira Knightley de novo. Ela é uma veterana em filmes de época. A Duquesa, de Saul Dibb, com figurinos por Michael O'Connor. Se Maria Antonieta era Sweet Rococo no filme da Sofia Coppola, Georgiana está mais pra Classical Rococo. Elas também tiveram vidas meio parecidas, e eram amigas na vida real! De verdade, os vestidos, chapeús e penteados nesse filme são lindos.

A Princesinha, dirigido por Alfonso Cuarón, figurinos de Judianna Makovsky. Baseado no livro de mesmo nome, esse é um filme que assisti quando criança (passava na Sessão da Tarde) - e eu amei. Tem algumas ótimas lições de vida. "Toda garota é uma princesa, mesmo que esteja vestida em trapos". Mas os "trapos" que elas vestem na maior parte do filme são bem bonitinhos!

...E o Vento Levou, dirigido por Victor Fleming, com figurinos de Walter Plunkett. Esse é outro filme que assisti há muito tempo, mas que deixou uma impressão forte em mim. Scarlet O'Hara tem um guarda-roupa de dar inveja. Ela até faz seu próprio vestido com uma cortina numa parte do filme!








Só pra vocês saberem, outros filmes que eu considerei foram Shakespeare Apaixonado, Amadeus, Emma, Razão e Sensibilidade, Les Choristes e O Ilusionista.
Pra quem gosta de figurinos de época em filmes, eu recomendo esse site: The Costumer's Guide. É incrível, com filmes separados por período histórico, e várias imagens de cada roupa usada pelos personagens.
